Housing benefit reform: Housing Benefit Plus (Wohngeld-Plus) for two million households

The German Housing Benefit Plus Act came into force on January 1, 2023. In the future, two million low-income households will be eligible for a state subsidy toward their housing costs. This will triple the number of households entitled to receive housing benefits. In addition, the new "Housing Benefit Plus" will be considerably higher – on average, twice the current subsidy amount. The federal and state governments will each cover half the costs.

Who will be eligible? How much is the new Housing Benefit Plus? You'll find the most important questions and answers on this page. The Housing Benefit Plus calculator provided by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building also serves as a useful first guide.
