The German Housing Benefit Plus Act came into force on January 1, 2023. In the future, two million low-income households will be eligible for a state subsidy toward their housing costs. This will triple the number of households entitled to receive housing benefits. In addition, the new "Housing Benefit Plus" will be considerably higher – on average, twice the current subsidy amount. The federal and state governments will each cover half the costs.
